Written by
Three Tree Hill in KwaZulu Natal has added a new family cottage, Burchell’s Cottage.

It is named in honour of William John Burchell, a 19th Century explorer, naturalist and author. In 1811, Burchell set of on a four-year, 7 000km journey through South Africa, collecting plant and animal specimens for research.

Burchell’s Cottage overlooks the Spioenkop Game Reserve and Mountain.

The cottage comprises two en-suite rooms, sleeping two couples or two adults and up to four children. Other facilities include a large deck, tea and coffee facilities, gas cooker, fridge/freezer, braai (barbecue) facilities and electronic safes.

The cottage has been decorated with replicas of Burchell’s drawings and a printed glass map detailing his journey. The furniture is locally custom-made using reclaimed cypress and cedar wood, while soft furnishings are made with locally produced fabric. Brass light fittings were salvaged from a shipwreck.

Guests can enjoy guided nature walks, mountain biking and horse trail riding at the property. Additionally, nearby, guests can do guided tours of the KZN Battlefields.
