Safari specialist, Acacia Africa is seeing renewed interest in Zimbabwe, bookings on the operators' tours up by 10% this year. Acacia claims the upward trend is set to continue as the country's anti-poaching initiatives are starting to deliver.
Described as one of the unsung highlights of Zimbabwe, Matobo National Park is renowned for its rhino walking safaris - the wildlife haunts a regular feature on Acacia Africa’s overland tours and small group safaris. News released in June is evidence that the country's practice of dehorning rhinos is paying off, with numbers (Matobo home to both the endangered black rhino and the threatened southern white rhino) on the increase.
Arno Delport, Sales & Marketing Manager at Acacia Africa comments, “2019 has certainly been a good year for Zimbabwe and the recent announcement will undoubtedly encourage yet more travellers to visit the country, as they know they are supporting conservation initiatives that are yielding positive results. Today’s clients are more keenly aware of their impact on the places they visit and responsible tourism practices, a country’s commitment to the environment and wildlife often influencing their choice of destination.”
“Obviously dehorning rhinos is only one part of the strategy. The more travellers who visit Zimbabwe, the better equipped the rangers will be in preventing further incidences of poaching - a portion of the park fees helping to provide funds for the rangers' equipment including, cameras and GPS technology.”
