Indian Ocean News

Dar House Zanzibar is available exclusively to one booking at a time - whether that be a honeymoon couple or even a party of eight - at a new price that will make clients want to say for a while. Located on Michamvi Pingwe Beach in the south east of the island, its a perfect finale to end a safari or as a standalone beach holiday.

Dar House has four ensuite bedrooms - with two double rooms at the front of the property that open out on to the private gardens and the Indian Ocean, along with two more twin-rooms to the rear of the house. There is a large courtyard/lounge area in the centre of the house, along with an upstairs open-fronted mezzanine floor, ideal for dining or relaxing out of the sun.

A serpentine pool weaves through a tropical garden of bold colours and verdant palms, a deck for dining and lounging looks out to sand and lagoons, plus an inner courtyard for privacy and four large ensuite bedrooms of pared-down, tropical chic, and louvered light. The high tide laps the garden wall, receding to reveal rock pools and the golden sandbank that leads out to a permanent azure swimming lagoon, Dar House is definitively a beach house!

The house comes with a chef/manager, butler, housekeeper, gardener and watchmen. Concierge services ensure that they help clients to do Zanzibar in style, their way, the right way.

The food is deliciously simple and fresh, mostly very local and generally organic, coming, whenever possible, from the beach out front and the garden out back....served where and when your guests want it!

A long strip of powder-fine sand beneath the shifting shade of postcard-perfect palms, Michamvi Pingwe is as pristine a tropical beach as they come. And, best of all, it remains pretty much untouched by tourism. The beach is special, but with only two other restaurants available, one of thatched beach chic, the other the famous Rock Restaurant , we can’t say its lively: just very friendly, totally unique and very easy.

Luxury Mozambique at an incredible price

Machangulo Beach Lodge, Maputo Bay, Mozambique.

Machangulo has just eight delightful rooms, and is only an hour speedboat trip out of Maputo- making it easily accessible- and it is definitely sensibly priced! Run by the Dunn and Nolte families, this amazing property is exactly our kind of place… and yours too.

Located on a peninsular into the Maputo Bay, the lodge overlooks endless white beaches and the beautiful open ocean. Pristine and untouched dune forests surround it and there are estuaries bursting with life, all ready for you to discover.

Machangulo has a warm and inviting atmosphere, keeping their guests calmly protected from the epic nature outside.

Each chalet has it’s own en-suite bathroom, air-conditioning, mosquito nets and private deck. Whilst five chalets have a breath taking view of the ocean and Inhaca Island, the other three are intimately situated amongst the unspoilt Mozambique dune forest.  Walkways and staircases to the main buildings and the beach connect all these chalets.

The Mauritius Minister for Tourism Mr. Michael Sik Yuen earlier this week made public the criteria to be used for the classification and grading of hotels across the island.

Aimed at enhancing the quality of services and reflect the reality of how clients see a hotel's standing vis a vis the present self styled allocation of 'stars', the new system was developed by the MTPA in close cooperation with international advisors, local stakeholders and tourism experts.

It is not clear though, if the Mauritius model of grading and classification of hotels, resorts, lodges, inns and restaurants has been done with any consultation with the other 'Vanilla Islands' to be comparable across other Indian Ocean main tourist destinations, similar to the development of East Africa's catalogue of criteria for grading and classification of hospitality businesses under the auspices of the East African Community, or if the Mauritius model has been developed purely for Mauritius alone and hence in some degree of isolation.

The question has been sent, if alternatively - RETOSA recently held a meeting of SADC tourism ministers in Port Louis - the new system has been harmonized with SADC or been aligned with other RETOSA member countries as a regular contributor from the island has questioned: 'It is all fair and good to put such a new system into place. But first, how capable is MTPA, how are the human resources in regard of training those doing the rating and grading. We all know how MTPA compares in the Indian Ocean region when it comes to promoting our tourism industry where others are capturing the limelight ahead of us. Secondly, were those criteria in any way created by looking at what other SADC members have done, or have we now reinvented the wheel. There are always close contacts with Seychelles, has their system been looked at and been compared?' Justified questions and perhaps answers will be forthcoming, so as the saying here goes, watch this space
