A growing number of women are opting to forge their own path out on the road. Tour operator, Acacia Africa has seen a noticeable rise in women booking as single travellers on their tours, the safari specialist’s overland itineraries catering to solo nomads.

Sabine Behrmann, Cape Town Manager at Acacia Africa, comments, “A growing number of female solo travellers (42%) are booking with us - an increase of 5% over the last year. While the increase is more pronounced on our overland tours - travellers on these trips aged between 18-39 years – we are also seeing a similar pattern on our open age small group programmes where women of all ages book with us.”

Acacia sees the change in travel preferences as a trend, and with more female bloggers choosing to navigate the world independently and influencing the way we travel, they expect it to become more pronounced over the course of the year.

Proof that travel is empowering for women, in a recent study* of over 1,000 women, the results showed 73 percent of the women see travel as a source of independence and strength while 69 percent consider travelling as inspiration.

Sabine Behrmann, comments “Group overland tours are a great halfway house for anyone who’s thinking of going it alone, and attractive to expert independent travellers (many offering a ready-made source of solo travel tips) who want to buddy up and share their wanderlust for a while. On our tours, you can also test out your solo-skills en route through Africa and enjoy free days (group time-out) in the following locations: Swakopmund, Vilanculos, Victoria Falls and Lake Malawi.”

Vast and massively underpopulated for its size, Acacia claims Namibia is one of the most popular countries for solo travellers going overland, followed by Mozambique, Zanzibar, Zimbabwe and Malawi.

Acacia Africa's is currently discounting select camping overland tours departing in March and April by 15%.

Dar House Zanzibar is available exclusively to one booking at a time - whether that be a honeymoon couple or even a party of eight - at a new price that will make clients want to say for a while. Located on Michamvi Pingwe Beach in the south east of the island, its a perfect finale to end a safari or as a standalone beach holiday.

Dar House has four ensuite bedrooms - with two double rooms at the front of the property that open out on to the private gardens and the Indian Ocean, along with two more twin-rooms to the rear of the house. There is a large courtyard/lounge area in the centre of the house, along with an upstairs open-fronted mezzanine floor, ideal for dining or relaxing out of the sun.

A serpentine pool weaves through a tropical garden of bold colours and verdant palms, a deck for dining and lounging looks out to sand and lagoons, plus an inner courtyard for privacy and four large ensuite bedrooms of pared-down, tropical chic, and louvered light. The high tide laps the garden wall, receding to reveal rock pools and the golden sandbank that leads out to a permanent azure swimming lagoon, Dar House is definitively a beach house!

The house comes with a chef/manager, butler, housekeeper, gardener and watchmen. Concierge services ensure that they help clients to do Zanzibar in style, their way, the right way.

The food is deliciously simple and fresh, mostly very local and generally organic, coming, whenever possible, from the beach out front and the garden out back....served where and when your guests want it!

A long strip of powder-fine sand beneath the shifting shade of postcard-perfect palms, Michamvi Pingwe is as pristine a tropical beach as they come. And, best of all, it remains pretty much untouched by tourism. The beach is special, but with only two other restaurants available, one of thatched beach chic, the other the famous Rock Restaurant , we can’t say its lively: just very friendly, totally unique and very easy.
